Around about 12.45 am on the morning
of 1st June 2001, Tintagel was shaken by an earthquake. The epicentre of the quake
was in the Bristol Channel, 25 miles from Hartland Point, Bude. I was
personally woken up by the noise of the quake but our cottage was not shaking or
any windows rattling. At that time I believed it was thunder or a heavy
roller trundling by the cottage. I was
told by a very frightened lady from Treknow, Tintagel that she was extremely
scared and her home shook & the windows rattled. Another resident in
Bossiney who was up at that time felt his house shake violently and all his
windows rattled. A report from Delabole, a village close by, confirmed the quake
which apparently was felt even more at Delabole. Other reports from villages
proved that the effect of the Earthquake, 3.6 on the Richter scale, was very
scary for locals & visitors alike. The effects of the quake was felt as far
afield as Gunnislake and in this area there was some structural damage to houses
How frightening it must have been in India where the scale of the earthquake was
3 million times greater
